What is Kirchentag? (2)
Kirchentag is a lay movement of the German Protestant
Churches. Most participants belong to Lutheran or
Reformed Churches though others come from other
denominations or none. There is a Katholicentag in the even
years between the odd years of Kirchentag and many
protestant Christians attend Katholicentag and catholic
Christians the Kirchentag. Beginning with Berlin in 2003,
there have also been three Ecumenical Kirchentags with
formal input from both Catholic and Protestant sources.
At Kirchentag, Christians gather for fellowship, for worship,
for Bible study, for networking, to consider the social and
international issues of the day, for music making and much
else. There is a programme including many hundred events
beginning with worship on the Wednesday evening and
concluding with worship on the Sunday morning and with
most events and exhibitions focussed on the three days in
between. Many of these events take place at the Exhibition
Centre of the host city though others take place in churches,
theatres and other venues throughout the city.
What is Kirchentag? (1)
Kirchentag is a gathering of Christians which takes place
every two years in a city in Germany.
In 2025, Kirchentag took place in Hannover from 30th April
to 4th May.
In 2027 the venue is Düsseldorf from 5th to 9th May.
In 2029 Hamburg will host the Kirchentag.
All attempts to find an English translation of ‘Kirchentag’
fail so it’s probably best just to stick with the native German
word.
Kirchentag’s full title is German Protestant Kirchentag.
Most of the participants are German and the principal
language of Kirchentag is German, though many people
attend Kirchentag from across the world and there are
some events in other languages (notably English), some
with simultaneous translation and most can be accessed
through volunteer personal interpreters.
What is Kirchentag? (3)
For participants from outside of Germany, there is an International Centre, often in the
Exhibition Centre, where people can meet up with friends and other international guests. Here
there is an endless supply of coffee and other refreshments and here the latest programme news
and other useful information and tips are available.
